Limits and fair use.
What the allowance is, what it isn't, and the caps that keep a free tier free. Written so you can check whether you fit before you migrate.
Effective 10 October 2026. These terms take effect when OpenPush opens to the public. They are published now so you can read them before deciding whether to sign up, and so any change between now and then is visible rather than sprung on you. If you need contractual certainty sooner, email legal@openpush.ai and we will deal with you directly.
The allowance is an audience, not a quota
Push is free to 1,000,000 monthly active users per app. A monthly active user means one unique subscribed device seen in a rolling 30-day window, counted per app.
This is deliberately a measure of how many people you can reach, not how many messages you may send. We do not publish a monthly notification figure for the free tier, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does: a big number printed on a pricing page is a number someone intends to enforce later. High-volume sending is something we reserve the right to throttle to protect the service, not an entitlement you are buying with a free account.
If your sending pattern is unusual — a launch spike, a live-ops event, a migration backfill — tell us at hello@openpush.ai and we will plan for it with you. We would much rather know in advance than throttle you mid-event.
The caps
| Limit | Value | Why it exists |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | 1,000,000 MAU per app | The free allowance. Unique subscribed devices, rolling 30 days, per app. |
| Per-subscriber frequency | 720 notifications per subscriber per 30 days | One an hour, sustained, is already far past the point where people mute you. This is a fatigue guard, not a budget. |
| Engagement floor | 0.01% click-through | Sending that nobody ever taps looks like abuse to Apple and Google, and it damages deliverability for every sender on the platform. |
| Data retention | 2 years | Delivery events and reporting history. Export it if you need it for longer. |
Rate limits also apply at the API level and may change as we learn what real traffic looks like. We will tell you before tightening one in a way that affects you.
One product, one app
The allowance is per app because that is how developers think about their products. Splitting a single product across several nominal "apps" to multiply the free ceiling is outside the spirit of it, and we may treat them as one app. As with everything here, we would rather have the conversation than switch something off.
What happens if you cross a line
In almost every case: an email, and time to sort it out. We throttle or suspend only for active harm — an abuse pattern, a deliverability threat to other senders, or a sustained load that is degrading the service for everyone else. Nothing here is a trapdoor designed to convert you to a paid plan.
Availability
We are not publishing an availability number yet. The public status page it would be measured against now exists — the server publishes one about itself at app.openpush.ai/status — but a percentage needs a meaningful period behind it, and there is not one yet. A number nobody can verify is marketing rather than a commitment. Free accounts get best-effort availability and best-effort support; the Terms say so plainly.
Where this fits
These limits form part of the Acceptable Use Policy and the Terms of Service. The free-forever commitments they sit alongside — never per subscriber, never repriced out of the free tier, data always exportable — are in the Terms.
